Midnight In The Valley

by lynnkennison

Inside the old barn

An echo drums

As loneliness comes forth

To welcome the night

But there’s a restless champion

Who never lost

Pacing within, still yearning to run

Impressive trophies that proved his worth

Are nestled under cobwebs, undisturbed

And though his u-shaped prints

Have long faded from the aisle

Outside, a beaten pathway

Remains empty of turf

Drive and heart gauge the midnight horizon

Chomping and stomping to embrace the rush

Lightning ignites the hammer charging

Hollowing mist within the valley beyond

Through shadow folds, obscure and free

An unbroken spirit commands his thunder

While pacing his stride to the echo’s drum
